ATF no longer requires approval or registration before a silencer, short-barreled rifle (SBR), short-barreled shotgun (SBS) or "any other weapon" (AOW) is transferred, and the $200 tax on these items has been $0 since January 1, 2026. At The Ozzy Shepherd in Draper, Utah, buying a silencer now works much like buying any other firearm: Form 4473, background check, and you take it home.
1. Choose your silencer in our online store, or on our Silencer Shop dealer page, and select The Ozzy Shepherd in Draper as your dealer.
2. We text you when it arrives.
3. Book a pickup appointment and bring a valid government-issued photo ID showing your current address.
4. Complete ATF Form 4473 and pass a background check, the same as any firearm purchase.
5. Take it home. No Form 4, no tax stamp, no months of waiting.
You must be 21 or older to buy a silencer from a dealer, legally able to own firearms, and live in a state where silencer ownership is legal. Utah residents qualify.
State and local laws on NFA items still apply. We cannot transfer an item that is illegal where you live.
Take care when travelling with an unregistered silencer, SBR or SBS through other states. SBR and SBS owners should keep filing ATF Form 20 before taking them across state lines.
Machine guns and destructive devices are not affected: full NFA approval, registration and the $200 tax still apply.
We are not lawyers. If you are unsure what your state allows, check with local authorities or a firearms attorney.
We receive silencers and other NFA items bought from other dealers. NFA transfers are $50 per item, free on anything bought from our store, and free for law enforcement and military. Pickups are by appointment in Draper.
Browse silencers, SBRs and suppressor packages in our online store, or use our Silencer Shop dealer page at silencershop.com/theozzyshepherd. Questions? Call or text 385-434-6804. Updated for the ATF open letter of October 9, 2026.
